The Savage Oceanic 46 was designed by Jack Savage and is well regarded as a great offshore yacht. Built in Melbourne by Parkescraft for her original owner to Qld Marine Survey requirements, she was first launched in 1994 and then fitted with a custom timber interior between 1994 and 1997. A second owner reconfigured the yacht for short-handed sailing in 1999 with new wiring, plumbing, skin fittings, electronics and rigging. She was re-engined with a new Volvo Penta MD 22VB 50HP diesel in 2000 and her hull was also refinished with epoxy below the waterline at that time. Since 2000, her third owner has cruised and raced her offshore with distinction, winning the Melbourne to Vanuatu Race outright under IRC in 2006.
Comfortably appointed and with generous headroom throughout, she has a large aft stateroom with a comfortable double berth and ensuite toilet accessed from the main cabin via a walkway or direct from the cockpit via its own companionway. The main saloon has a u shaped dinette table to port with a settee berth to starboard, The fore-cabin has a large V-berth with an adjoining enclosed toilet and shower. There are 6 permanent berths plus 2 removable pipe-cots. There is vast storage capacity throughout this yacht with excellent access to all systems, plumbing, wiring etc. Entertainment is provided by colour TV and AM-FM-CD player stereo.
The sea going L shaped galley is fitted with a brand new, so far unused Force Ten 4 burner gas stove with oven and grill, twin deep stainless steel sinks, two separate eutectic fridges plus two separate freezers. Pressure hot and cold water is delivered to galley, heads and shower. Water capacity is 400 litres backed up by a PUR40 water maker. Hot water is delivered via engine heat exchange or 240v shore power, Storage in the galley area is extensive.
The navigation area features a good sized chart table with swivelling navigators seat and has an array of electronics and electrical switch panels close at hand. Electronics include an integrated Brookes and Gatehouse Network providing all the usual functions and interfaced to two separate Garmin GPS displays with Plotters, Garmin Radar and B & G ACP1 Autopilot with linear drive direct to the quadrant enabling self steering directed by Wind, Compass or GPS. Communications equipment includes Codan 9930 HF transceiver, Icom IC-M505 VHF transceiver, Icom IC-M35 hand held VHF transceiver, Thrane & Thrane Satellite communications system and Oceantalk AIS vessel ID system.
Power systems include 12v ships power via 6 AGM house batteries and 1 dedicated engine start battery, 240V Shore power, 2 new solar panels on the stern targa and a Honda 6v, 12v or 24v genset. Two alternators are fitted to the engine. Power is managed by a Smart System monitoring battery voltage and input and output amperage.
Safety equipment for blue water sailing includes a 6 person Zodiac liferaft, Fire extinguishers, Fire blanket, Life rings, Sea Anchor and Drogue, Foghorn, Lifesling MOB retrieval system, mast mounted Blipper Radar reflector, Masthead strobe light and more.
On deck she is well set up for easy sailing, short handed or fully crewed, An electric Harken winch handles the halyards and all lines are led aft to the shelter of the cockpit under the solid dodger, ensuring dry passage making in bad weather. All rigging was replaced on return from Vanuatu in 2007 and a new headsail furler was then fitted to the forestay. An inner forestay allows staysails to be carried in heavy weather. There are 6 Harken 44 winches, 2 Barlow 32s and a Barlow 24 mainsheet winch. 17 well labelled Spinlock rope clutches ensure easy handling. Steering is via a large diameter stainless steel wheel with and electronic displays and compass in the cockpit and on the binnacle.
The sail wardrobe is in great condition fgor any weather. This includes the fully battened 3 reef mainsail, 4 headsails, 2 spinnakers, 2 staysails, furling reacher, furling yankee jib, storm jib and trisail. A new mainsail bag with top zip and Lazy Jacks was fitted late in 2016. Reefing the mainsail can be done from the cockpit. All necessary sheets and lines are included.
Miscellaneous equipment includes a Zodiac 2.85m dinghy inflatable with Honda 5 HP outboard, a battened sun awning and a vast array of spare parts including engine consumables. A late 2016 professional maintenance program saw a full overhaul of engine and gearbox, new solar panels, new engine bay soundproofing, some new batteries, new masthead wind gear, slipping and antifoul with some new skin fittings installed and new LED cabin lighting throughout. The fridges and freezers were serviced and re-gassed and the gas installation and alarms checked and re-certified while the new stove and oven was fitted in the galley.
