This ‘modern’ International 5.5m was imported to Australia in 2019 by a 5.5m enthusiast who has another 5.5m that he intends to compete with in the January 2020 World Championships here in Sydney, so he is keen to have this yacht compete to build the fleet.
It’s very much a turnkey package having been campaigned by the owner in Europe for a season with 1st place in the ‘Berliner Bar’ regatta and Bodenseewoche’ in 2018. It comes with a brand new unused set of North 3Di sails developed from the knowledge built up in that season, and also has an unregistered road trailer.
The International 5.5m is a development class which was established 70 years ago this year and was an Olympic class in its early years. The fleet is divided into ‘classics’ for pre 1970’s boats, ‘Evolutions’ in between, and ‘modern’ for those built from 1994. Some 730 yachts have been built and the Australian fleet has grown rapidly in recent years, with 10 yachts now racing out of RPAYC which is to host the Worlds.
“Alpha Crucis” was designed by Sebastian Schmidt in 2008 as a development of SUI222 and launched in March 2009 as SUI223, originally known as “Ali Baba”. It was built by 5.5m specialist Christof Wilke & Co in Switzerland.
